Ruggedized Computers vs. Commercial Computers

1. Magnesium Casings. Magnesium is 10-20 times tougher than ABS plastic. This tougher casing provides significant protection against accidental drops.

2. Shock-Mounted Hard Disk Drives. The disk drive in a ruggedized computer is mounted on springs, on rubber or on a gel-like substance. This allows the disk to float so-to-speak.

3. Additional Cushioning and Padding. There are additional steps taken inside the computer to protect the vital components from drops and vibration. There may be foam rubber, Styrofoam or other cushioning materials.

4. Hardened Glass. Many ruggedized computers use hardened glass for the display screen. It is not unbreakable, but is much harder to shatter and scratch than the regular glass in a commercial computer.

5. Sealed Against the Elements. Most semi-rugged computers offer sealed keyboards and display screens. This provides protection against liquid spills. The fully-rugged computers take this a step further and seal the entire computer.

6. Outdoor-Viewable Display Screens. The displays in commercial, plastic computers are designed for indoor use and are not bright enough to be seen outdoors. All fully-rugged computers offer the option of anti-glare sunlight readable display screens.

7. Intrinsically-Safe. Some rugged computers are designated "Intrinsically-Safe". This means that they are guaranteed not to emit a spark and thus can be safely used around hazardous materials or flammable gases.

8. Three-Year Warranty. Most ruggedized computers come automatically with a three, or sometimes even five, year warranty as opposed to the one year warranty provided with commercial computers.

What does MIL-STD 810E or MIL-STD 810F mean?

A United States Defense Standard often called a military standard, "MIL-STD", or "MIL-SPEC", is used to help achieve standardization objectives by the U.S. Department of Defense.

MIL-STD 810E refers to the type of testing that the mobile computer is put through to determine its ruggedness. Rugged mobile computers will state that it is MIL-STD 810E rated or may say it is MIL-STD 810F compliant. They both mean the same level of ruggedness is applicable. MIL-STD 810F is just a revision of MIL-STD 810E and applies more to the testing process rather than the resulting rating. MIL-STD 810E and F are the highest standards for ruggedized testing for mobile computers.

All About Warranties

Three Year Warranty
Almost all of the rugged computers come standard with a 3 year warranty, while most commercial, plastic computers come standard with only a 1 year warranty. Not only does this save you a lot of money in case of a failure, but it also speaks to the quality that is built in to a rugged computer. If they were not extremely reliable, the rugged computer manufacturers could not afford to provide a 3 year warranty.

Extended and Expanded Warranties
Warranty extensions can be acquired to extend the warranty from three years to four years or five years. Also, some warranties can be upgraded to include "no-fault" warranties, on-site warranties, or 24 hour turnaround warranties. Extended warranties can also be acquired on major peripherals and docks which are not included in the computer's warranty, or are only warranteed for one year.
