Your Guide to Rugged Mobile Computers

Rugged Computers, also known as hardened computers, and ruggedized computers have been around since the late 1970s / early 1980s, so they basically have been around as long as the PC industry itself. It was quickly discovered and understood that commercial-grade PCs, designed for office workers or even highly-mobile, white-collar workers and frequent flyers, would not hold up in an in-field, in-vehicle, outdoor, or warehouse/factory type of environment. Rugged technology has been developed to allow what is a fairly delicate piece of sophisticated electronics, to be able to function and survive while on-the-go, in the field, and even in tough environmental conditions. Rugged computers have proven time and time again to save end users and organizations large amounts of money, time, and grief due to their durability, reliability, longevity, and 3- to 5-year full warranties… Read more…

Rugged UMPC’s

A Rugged UMPC is an ultra mobile rugged computer that is smaller than a rugged laptop or rugged tablet PC, but a little bigger than a rugged handheld. The advantage of a rugged UMPC is its small form factor and ability to run full blown Windows XP or Vista operating systems. Group Mobile offers two rugged UMPC’s in its product line… Click the links to read more about each rugged UMPC.

General Dynamics Itronix GoBook MR-1 Fully Rugged UMPC - The GoBook MR-1 fully rugged UMPC (Ultra Mobile Personal Computer) from General Dynamics Itronix is a full blown rugged computer with an amazing sunlight readable display, that can run Windows® XP or Vista — all in a compact 5"x 7" shell.

This rugged UMPC is revolutionary in that it uses the new Atom processor by Intel which is a low heat producing and low power consuming processor. The Xplore iX104C4 Rugged Mobile Tablet PC

The rugged tablet PCs from Xplore Technologies are able to hold up in even the most demanding conditions. Our customers have used these rugged tablets in coal mines, on heavy construction sites, on forklifts, at the north pole…you name it, and they can take a beating and keep on ticking (with apologies to Timex). The rubber bumpers that surround these tablet PCs are icing on the cake when combined with the tough magnesium casing of the unit itself. The iX104C4 and iX104C4 Lite are "ingress protection rated" at IP-65. This basically means that nothing from the outside is getting inside the tablet to cause problems. The only point of weakness, as is the case with most rugged computers, is the display screen itself. We have had a few come back for screen replacement after the computer was dropped and the display screen came in direct contact with a hard and sharp object. But even this calamity is somewhat mitigated by the hardened glass that Xplore uses in their rugged tablets.

Marine & Aviation Computers

In the marine industry, fully-rugged computers are protected from salt spray and against corrosion due to salt air and humidity since they are sealed against the elements. Rugged laptops and tablet pcs are also essential in the aviation industry for maintenance workers and engineers because they are able to store the aircraft schematics in a computer that is able to withstand the elements, extreme temperatures and most importantly accidental drops. Pilots also use rugged laptops and tablets in flight bag applications.

Some of the Group Mobile recommendations for Marine and Aviation environments include the General Dynamics-Itronix Duo-Touch II Rugged Tablet PC – a fully rugged tablet PC that combines the functionality of a touchscreen computer with a digitizer computer into one display, the Panasonic H1 Field - with superior ergonomics, a 10.4" sunlight-viewable screen and sealed all-weather rugged design, and the Getac A790 – this is the most rugged laptop in our line and it is also the "most configurable" rugged computer on the market.

Rugged Computer Features - Power and Batteries

Choosing the correct power accessories is an important aspect of ensuring you have the right solution for your rugged mobile computing requirements. Below we have listed the various choices and considerations:

AC Adapter - All mobile computers come standard with an ac adapter for plugging into a wall outlet. Some users buy an additional ac adapter in order to have one at work and one at home. Please note, desktop docks often do not come with an ac adapter as the manufacturer assumes you will use the ac adapter that came with your computer. Make sure you order an extra ac adapter with your desktop dock if you need more than one.

Vehicle Power Adapter - All rugged mobile and in-vehicle computers can operate from the power provided by a vehicle's battery. Usually this is accomplished by a 12V vehicle power adapter, also known as a cigarette lighter adapter. Your rugged mobile PC can also be connected directly to the vehicle's battery via a hot wire. But it is highly recommended that a power protection device is used in between any in-vehicle computer and battery to avoid hard-shut downs and other issues.

Battery - All portable computers come with a battery. The battery is normally a Lithium-Ion type and can be recharged 200+ times before it can no longer hold a charge. Therefore the batteries inside any rugged mobile pc need to be replaced every 1-3 years, depending on usage. The length of time that a charge will last varies greatly. The range is 2 hours to 10 hours depending on the battery, the computer and the usage.

Have you Considered a Docking Station for your Rugged Computer?

A docking station is a hardware frame with a set of electrical connection interfaces that enable your rugged notebook computer to effectively serve as a desktop computer. The interfaces typically allow your rugged laptop, tablet pc, or handheld to communicate with a local printer, larger storage or backup drives, and possibly other devices that are not usually taken along with an in-field computer. A docking station can also include a network interface card that attaches your ruggedized computer to a local area network. Variations include the port replicator, which is an attachment on a computer that expands the number of ports it can use, and the expansion base, which might hold a media drive, a floppy disk drive, and a battery charging station.

To find out a docking station for your rugged tablet pc, rugged laptop, or handheld, click here and choose the applicable product line. You can also search for other accessories while you’re at it – like great ruggedized carry cases, extra memory, or additional stylus pens.

Will a Rugged Tablet PC work for me?

Rugged Tablet PC's are designed for those who work in the factory, warehouse or in the field and are often used for data collection activities. They can also take the place of the manual completion of forms. The primary value of a ruggedized tablet pc is that the data is collected or the forms completed once, and the information does not have to be entered or re-keyed into an office computer. This saves time and eliminates transcription errors. Signature capture is another popular usage, particularly for service or delivery workers who need to capture the customers' or package recipients' signature.

Understanding Touch Screens

Touchscreens are often a feature or upgrade option on rugged, mobile computers that are not offered on commercial, plastic computers. Basically, a touchscreen is another way to move around in an application other than the keyboard/mouse. In the rugged computer world, touch screens come in two flavors - the more traditional finger-touch style of touch screen also called passive or resistive, and the newer style digitizer or active touch screen which requires the use of a stylus pen and allows for handwriting or signature capture directly on the screen of the ruggedized laptop, handheld, or tablet. Some manufacturers offer rugged computer models with one or the other type while others offer a dual-mode which provides both types in the same computer.

Touchscreens are often a desirable feature for in-vehicle computers or for any ruggedized in-field computer used in an environment where typing is difficult. Some organizations develop or purchase software that is specifically designed with a touchscreen in mind that will have big touch buttons on the screen (think about an ATM machine or restaurant cash register for example).

Rugged Fixed Mount PC's

A fixed-mount rugged PC is designed to be mounted to something or on something and to stay there. Fixed-mount rugged PC's do not have internal batteries; therefore they cannot be carried around away from an AC outlet or a vehicle battery. There are two typical applications for a rugged fixed-mounted computer. One is in a factory or industrial environment where the rugged computer is mounted to the wall or to a piece of equipment for monitoring/control. The second typical application is when a rugged computer is needed in or on a vehicle or any mobile conveyance. Examples of this would be cars, trucks, semis, forklifts, tractors, backhoes, ATV's, cement mixers, aircraft, ships, barges, etc. Fixed-mount rugged PC's are typically ultra rugged, totally sealed and designed to run for many years without problems.
